A&D WINES

Having a several generations-long family tradition of farming in Baião region, Alexandre Gomes inherited a connection to the land, the people and the farming activities that have fascinated him since an early age. In 1991 he began planting a new vineyard of about 5 hectares spread over a number of plots, as Quintal, Tapadinha, Padronelo, Sarrabalde, Bogalhão, and Várzea, where native grape varieties of the region, Avesso, Arinto and Alvarinho, were planted.
Having an already mature vineyard and aiming to raise awareness of the quality of the wines produced, Alexandre and his wife Dialina, set in 2005 the A&D Wines company and plan investments, both in viticulture and in the creation of infrastructures, for the production of quality wine. From then on the initiatives and projects have multiplied… They purchase a property in the same region, the Quinta dos Espinhosos, with a 7 ha vineyard area that will allow them to put into practice the project of creating a cellar with all the necessary equipment for producing farm white wines. The Casa do Arrabalde wine is introduced into the markets in 2007 and in 2009 the first Espinhosos harvest occurs. The introduction into the national market was difficult due to the beginning of the financial crisis in 2008 and resulting retraction of consumption in Portugal. Reacting to the difficulty in entering the Portuguese market, A&D Wines rapidly starts to explore several European markets. Since then several markets have been conquered, namely in United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and Sweden. In 2014 and 2015 they take the first step into markets outside European Union, namely Canada, USA and Brazil. Exports make up the majority of sales – about 90%. In 2015, A&D Wines decide to move to a more ambitious project and purchase Quinta de Santa Teresa, another bet in Baião sub-region, comprising 33 ha vineyard, 5 ha of Casa do Arrabalde and 7 hectares of Quinta dos Espinhosos, which makes a total of 45 ha. The aim in the medium term is to achieve a production of 300.000 bottles and put Quinta de Santa Teresa in the map of Enotourism in this region. In 2016 they present four new references of 2015 harvest, the first of A&D Wines at Quinta de Santa Teresa. They introduce the brand Monólogo for the three wines and unique parcel, namely Monólogo Arinto P24, Monólogo Avesso P67 and Monólogo Chardonnay P706. This last one is located in Quinta dos Espinhosos. They also present Singular, “blend” according to the choice and taste of Eng. Fernando Moura, oenologist at A&D Wines.
