Douro wines

The Douro Region is one of the oldest and most beautiful wine regions in Europe, dating back more than 250 years. It is located in the northeast of Portuguese territory and develops along the Douro River valley, having as its northern, western
and southern limits mountain range systems and the border with Spain to the east.
The Douro, as we know it, is a mosaic of grape varieties, which stands out for the unique beauty of its slopes and for the vineyards planted up to the banks of the river.

It is also in the Douro that the illustrious Port Wine, the main ambassador of Portuguese Wines, is born. The Douro Region is thus distinguished from other wines by the production of this fortified wine with unique characteristics, and very
specific production methods that consist in stopping the fermentation of the must by adding brandy.

Douro Sub-Regions

The admirable scenery is combined with the excellence of the wines produced in the three sub-regions of the Douro: Baixo Corgo in the west, Cima Corgo in the center and Douro Superior in the east. In each sub-region there are slight climatic changes due to the altitude and sun
exposure in the deep valleys.

In general, the climate is quite dry and the mountainous ranges offer the vines protection from the winds. In Baixo Corgo the air is wetter and fresher, as it still receives some Atlantic influence. In addition, rainfall is higher, helping to
fertilize the soil and increase production. In Cima Corgo,
the climate is Mediterranean and in the Douro Superior it is even desert (temperatures reach 50ºC in summer).

Douro Regions - Characteristics

In white wines it is possible to find fresh wines, with fruity and floral aromas, of great aromatic intensity, which should be drunk young. It is also possible to find whites that were fermented or aged in
wood and which are wines with complex aromas of tropical fruits and almond and buttery notes, full-bodied and with aging potential. Regarding reds, it is possible to find young wines, with cherry and raspberry aromas, round and ready to be consumed from the moment they are bottled.

The Douro Region also has great aptitude for aging red wines which, when young, have an intense purple color, aromas of black fruits, chocolate, violet and woody notes, if this type of aging has been chosen. These wines, full-bodied and powerful in their youth, become
complex and delicate in their heyday.
