Alentejo wines

Alentejo is one of the largest and most important wine regions in Portugal, where the view is lost in extensive plains and unique and breathtaking landscapes. Occupying an area equivalent to a third of Portugal, it is a region with a vast and monumental historical legacy, an extremely rich culture, and characterized by its serene and hospitable people.

This hot and dry region benefited from numerous investments in the wine sector, which resulted in the production of some of the best Portuguese wines, most fruity and easy to drink, and consequently, in the international recognition of Alentejo wines all over the world.

Alentejo Sub-Regions

The Alentejo Region is vast and varied, but only five percent of the land is dedicated to wine production. One of the most interesting areas is around the city of Portalegre, towards the Spanish border, where the altitude and cold climate are responsible for the production of fresh and elegant wines. In this Region everything is different from the rest of Alentejo. The soils, the varieties, the altitude. and the age of the vines themselves.

In turn, the central region, around the cities of Évora, Borba, Estremoz, and Reguengos, is warmer, which helps the grapes to ripen and allows for the creation of full-bodied wines characterized by a balanced acidity. Further south, near Beja, the great wines are influenced by the soil that varies between granite and chalk shale.

Alentejo Regions - Characteristics

All the oldest Portuguese Producing Regions enjoy the DOC Statute. In addition to protecting the genuineness of the origin, it seeks to ensure the quality of the wines of each region, namely by establishing the recommended varieties, the winemaking methods, the minimum alcohol content, the yields per hectare, and the aging periods in bottle or casks. For regulatory purposes, DOC Alentejo is divided into eight different sub-regions: Portalegre, Borba, Redondo, Vidigueira, Reguengos, Moura, Évora and Granja/Amareleja.

Alentejo Wines are thus known for presenting a balanced profile, with structure, elegance, and longevity that allow a great diversity and choice for the most demanding consumer, whether for a more immediate consumption or to patiently wait for the perfect moment of consumption.
